The government of Pakistan launched the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) in July 2008 as a major national security institution with the primary objective of improving welfare and reducing economic impacts. At that time, the country was experiencing a rapid increase in food prices, the prices of basic products were reaching the highest level in the last 30 years, and the economy was affected by a global crisis. The program aims to provide cash transfers from the poorest families of the country to vulnerable and deserving women and their families, regardless of political, or ethnic origin, race, region, and religion. Long-term goals include achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending poverty and empowering women.
The project was created by the Parliament Resolution with the support of the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the President of Pakistan.
